State Police say a Hancock man is dead after being hit by a car on Route 1 in Hancock Wednesday morning.

Who Died in the Crash?

Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss says State Police responded to the scene at approximately 6:15 and found Edwin Rowe, 67, of Hancock deceased. Officials say a preliminary investigation indicates that Shawna Hardison, 57, of Lamoine was driving a white Chevy S-10 pickup truck in the northbound lane when her vehicle struck Rowe, who was walking in the roadway.

What Were the Road Conditions?

Police say Rowe was wearing dark clothing at the time and that the stretch of road where he was hit was dark, with no streetlights. Weather and visibility appear to have been factors in the crash, according to investigators.

Was the Pickup Truck's Driver Hurt?

Hardison was not injured.

Route 1 between the post office and Point Road in Hancock was closed for quite some time, while the crash was investigated. The roadway has since reopened to traffic. Hancock Grammar School had a 2-hour delay because of that closure.

This incident remains under investigation. Our condolences to Mr. Rowe's family and friends.

Maine State Police were assisted at the scene by members of the Hancock County Sheriff's Office, Fire Departments from Hancock, Sullivan, and Franklin, as well as Dave's Towing.

We'll update it when more details become available.
