A man was killed when a fire started in his Rockport motel room overnight.

UPDATE: The victim has been identified as 53-year-old Kevin Stanley. Officials say smoking is the likely cause of the fire.

The fire was called in at around 3:30 Monday morning, at the Schooner Bay Motor Inn on Route 1. Fire officials told WABI-TV that a police officer pulled a man from the hotel room, but were unable to revive him. No one else was hurt in the incident. According to a post on the Rockland Fire Department's Facebook page, the fire started on the mattress, and the room suffered some smoke damage.

The State Fire Marshal's Office will now work to determine how the fire started. The victim's name has not been released.
