State and local police are investigating the death of a Fort Kent man who was found in his apartment.

Department of Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland says Fort Kent Police were called to the apartment house at 485 West Main Street at around 12:30 Sunday afternoon. Responding officers found the body of 49-year-old Daren Charette inside one of the apartments. Charette lived in the building.

Charette's body was taken to the State Medical Examiner's Office in Augusta, where an autopsy will be conducted to determine cause of death. The case is under investigation by the State Police Major Crimes Unit and Fort Kent Police. Detectives are conducting interviews to try and determine the circumstances of the death, but have said there's no threat to the public.
