A standoff with police that started Tuesday afternoon is stretching into the night, so the Orrington Fire Department is finding shelter for local families who've been evacuated.

The Penobscot County Sheriff's Office says the incident began with a man who was making threats against law enforcement. Deputies, State and Brewer Police officers converged on Johnson Mill Road in Orrington, in the section between Center Drive and Swett's Pond Road as they tried to communicate with the man. Tactical teams arrived late in the afternoon.

As the standoff stretched into the late afternoon and evening, local residents were either evacuated or told to shelter in place with their doors locked. Orrington Fire Department has posted on its Facebook page that anyone who still needs shelter for the night could call the department at 825-3530 and they would find a place for them to spend the night.
