An Orono man has been arrested for allegedly assaulting an infant, causing life-threatening injuries.

Maine State Police report 24-year-old Cyree Hansley was arrested after the child was taken to the hospital with one eye swollen shut. The boy's mother told hospital staff members that she thought the child was reacting to immunizations he'd received earlier in the day. After an examination, doctors told her that the child had suffered a stroke and had a life-threatening skull fracture.

Police say Hansley had just moved in with the mother and child, is believed to be the mother's boyfriend, but is not the child's father. He was responsible for the baby's care while the mother was working or at school.

Hansley is charged with Aggravated Assault of a child under the age of 6. Court documents state that he initially told investigators that the boy fell when his bathtub chair tipped backward, but later changed his story. He's being held on $25,000 bail.
