Jim and I originally started watching 'One Lucky Elephant' because we thought it was the story of the two elephants living in Hope, Maine. But it turned out to be an amazing, touching, and educational ten-year journey with Flora the elephant and the man who loved her most.

When many people think of elephants, they immediately think of size, circus performances, and the cliche of an elephant's fear of mice. What they may not think about is that elephants can live up to 70 years. They're very family-oriented and consider the herd their extended family.

This movie follows the relationship between Flora the elephant and David, a circus producer. He buys Flora after her mother was killed by hunters in Africa and she was brought to the U.S. David builds a circus around Flora and treats her like a queen! In essence, he becomes her 'herd.'

But after many years, David realizes that Flora is getting too old to perform and he wants to find a place where she can retire and live with other elephants. This turns out to be much harder than he suspected, however.

The filmmakers follow the relationship between these two unlikely friends for ten years. It will make you laugh and will make you cry. And you'll come away with a better understanding and respect for these great creatures.
