One Person Injured in Shooting on Grounds of South Portland High
South Portland Police say the shooting of a juvenile on the grounds of the high school was not school-related.
Detective Sergeant Christopher Todd says police were sent to 637 Highland Avenue in South Portland just after 8:30 Monday night, for a report of a possible shooting. This is the 'Upper Lot,' which provides parking for South Portland High School. When officers arrived, they found a juvenile male victim who appeared to have suffered a gunshot wound to his leg. An ambulance was called to the scene, and the victim was transported to Maine Medical Center, with what appeared to be non-life-threatening injuries.
Officials say there were several potential witnesses who were present at the time of the shooting, and detectives spent the night conducting interviews. Investigators are still working on what motivated the shooting, but say this appears to have been an isolated incident, and not just a random attack. Sergeant Todd says it's important for the public to know that there is no evidence, at this point, that suggests the shooting is in any way 'school related.'
Anyone with information about the case is asked to contact South Portland Police Detective Jeff Levesque at 207-799-5511, Extension 7435.
