Motorists are advised to beware of a large sinkhole that's opened up in front of the post office. Public Works is on the scene of what's being called a sewer break.

A Bangor Police dispatcher confirmed this morning that there is a large sinkhole on Hammond Street. It's right in front of the post office, near Bangor Wine and Cheese. She told us the approximate dimensions are 10 feet by 12 feet, and about 30 feet deep. A representative from the City of Bangor has since told us it's actually only about 8 feet deep.

City Officials posted on the Downtown Bangor Facebook page that the hole is due to sewer break. Hammond Street Hill will be closed from Central Street to the top of the Ohio Street intersection until the issue is resolved. There is no traffic allowed between Court and Columbia Streets. Barriers are up and detours are posted.
