Consumers' Checkbook conducted a study using grocery stores in the Washington area as a sample to evaluate price and quality. Researchers compared prices by shopping for a 154-item list of common products at various stores. To assess quality, they surveyed local consumers about their experiences with products and service. The findings provide insight into how stores perform overall in terms of cost and customer satisfaction.

With that in mind, what is the most expensive grocery store in America, and where can we find it in Maine?

According to Consumers' Checkbook’s 2022 study, ‘Which Grocery Stores Offer the Best Prices and Quality?’, Whole Foods Market is the country’s most expensive grocery store. Consumers' Checkbook had the following to say about their selection:

Our price survey found that Whole Foods remains the most expensive choice among local chains and stores we shopped. Its overall prices were about 23 percent higher than the average prices at all stores we shopped, or about 19 percent higher than top-rated Wegmans’.

So, there you have it—Whole Foods Market has been named the most expensive grocery store in America. But where can we find it in Maine?

Maine’s only Whole Foods Market is located on Somerset Street in the state’s largest city, Portland. This location opened in February 2007, and with nearly two decades of success, it’s clear that Mainers don’t mind paying more for the Whole Foods experience.
