In a recent report highlighting mortgage delinquency debt rates across the country, Maine’s numbers are actually looking pretty good.

They call Maine the way life should be,’ but does that phrase really hold up across the board? Sure, our mortgage delinquency numbers are lower than the national average—but in a perfect world, should we be dealing with any at all?

But that raises the question—how do we, or anyone for that matter, know where mortgage delinquency is increasing or decreasing, and who’s behind the research?

To find out which states are seeing the biggest drops in mortgage delinquency, WalletHub analyzed its own user data on mortgage loan delinquency rates from Q4 2024 to Q1 2025. The data used for the rankings was collected from WalletHub’s database as of April 24th, 2025.

So, with that in mind, where does Maine rank, and what are the mortgage numbers looking like for our Pine Tree State this year?

According to WalletHub and their study titled ‘States Where Mortgage Delinquency Is Decreasing the Most,’ Maine ranks 8th—meaning we’re one of the states where it’s dropping the fastest.

While Maine ranks 8th overall in the study, that ranking comes from two key stats: 6.91% of mortgage loans were delinquent in Q1 2025, and that number dropped by 9.62% compared to Q4 2024.

For comparison, Montana took the top spot with just 5.01% of loans delinquent and a sharp -17.02% drop in delinquencies over the same period.

And there you have it—of all the states in the country, Maine is seeing one of the biggest decreases in mortgage delinquency debt.
