Mexican National Nabbed At Maine Border Entering U.S. Illegally
A resident of Mexico was arrested this week entering the United States illegally, at the Calais border crossing.
Houlton Sector Border Patrol Agents responded to a report of possible illegal activity and found Benigno Godinez-Cortez, 45, in downtown Calais. The man admitted to border agents that he illegally crossed the border and didn't have any immigration documents. He told them he was waiting for a ride from his girlfriend, who is a resident of Australia.
Officials ran a background check and found that Godinez-Cortez had actually been ordered removed from the United States in 1994. He was arrested on Tuesday and charged with re-entry after removal and entry without inspection. His girlfriend is charged with inducing him to enter the U.S.
The case will now be turned over to the United States' Attorney's office.
