Police have released the name of the man who was killed when his tent caught fire in a wooded area in South Portland.

The man has been identified as Rodney Jewell, 48, a transient with no known address, police said.

His body was found April 3 in a burnt tent about 100 feet from I-295, near Exit 4 in South Portland.

Police told the Portland Press Herald a DNA comparison with a family member was used to confirm the man's identity.

The state medical examiner’s office ruled his death an accident and said he died from smoke and soot inhalation.

Police said they were able to contact family members in northern Maine and notify them of his death.
