Man Accused Of Massachusetts Rapes In The ’90’s Caught On MDI
A man suspected of committing several rapes in Massachusetts in the 1990's has been arrested on Mount Desert Island.
Bristol District Attorney Thomas Quinn III says that 61-year-old Ivan Keith was arrested on August 2nd in the town of Tremont, on MDI. Keith, who was originally from Bridgewater, Massachusetts, was living in Maine under an assumed name.
MassLive.com says the persistence of a rape victim and the encouragement and diligence of an Easton Police Detective ultimately led to Keith's arrest. In 2011, Detective William Fulcher was about to retire, but made sure a rape kit in the case was sent out for further testing. The DNA contained in that rape kit helped lead police to a man arrested in Maine. Authorities took DNA from a vaping pipe Keith had with him when he was taken into custody.
Keith appeared in court in Taunton, Massachusetts on Wednesday, where not guilty pleas were entered on his behalf. He's charged with five counts of aggravated rape, two counts of kidnapping, two counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, two counts of threats to commit bodily harm, assault with a dangerous weapon, breaking and entering into a building in the night with intent to commit a felony, failure to register as a sex offender, making false statements, and perjury. A judge has ordered him held without bail, pending a dangerousness hearing.
