When I was growing up, my Mom would direct us to the box of last year's costumes and say, 'Pick one.' Of course, this was after we'd nearly grown out of trick-or-treating and were more excited about the candy than the clothes.

Maybe it's because of those years that I think creating a costume, rather than buying one off the rack, is more fun.

Before you panic, I'm not talking about sewing dresses or doing complicated crafts. These are easier to assemble than you might think. Trust me, I'm not a crafty person or skilled seamstress.

You may need to buy clothes or wigs to complete these costumes, but thrift stores are great for the clothes, as long as you're not too fussy about getting them exactly right, and the wigs are pretty affordable at Walmart.
