A man accused of sexually assaulting a 9-year-old child is in custody after eluding police for 5 years.
Maine Man Accused in Sexual Assault of a Child Has Been a Fugitive for Years
Cody Smart, 33, of Sanford, was accused of sexually assaulting a nine-year-old child in 2021.
He was charged with gross sexual assault and solicitation of a child, but when his court case came around, he was nowhere to be found.
Warrants were issued for his arrest, but they couldn't be served because Smart had vanished.
Maine Officials and U.S. Marshals Located a Fugitive in a Home in Limerick
Police have tried to locate him for several years, but those attempts have all been unsuccessful.
That is, until this month.
York County Sheriff's Deputies and members of the U.S. Marshals Service worked together to follow up on leads that indicated Smart was living in Limerick.
Maine Sexual Assault Suspect Found Hiding in Limerick Home
On April 22nd, Deputies and Maine State Troopers tracked Smart to a home in Limerick and found the fugitive hiding in a bedroom.
He was taken into custody without incident.
Cody Smart was transported to the York County Jail, where his bail was set at $25,000.
