Did You Know People Downhill Ski On Mt Katahdin In Maine?

I never knew people skied on Mt. Katahdin, but I'm impressed with those who dare to do it.

I never thought anyone would attempt to climb Mt. Katahdin in the winter. I've climbed the Cathedral Trail and stood at the summit in the summertime, which was hard enough. Climbing over snow and ice with a full pack, complete with ski equipment, is daunting.

So, it shocked me when I saw a video from the Ski the East Facebook page of a skier swooshing down the side of Maine's tallest mountain. Then, it surprised me when I mentioned it to one of my coworkers, who pulled out his phone and started showing me these photos and even this video of the time he and a friend skied Katahdin.

I asked him whether special permission is required to ski the big mountain, and he said permits are required if you plan to ski above the treeline. In this photo, he says the sign at the summit of Katahdin was below his feet, buried beneath the snow. That's as far above the treeline as you can go.

This is not your typical ski trail. One of our listeners who skied the mountain when she was younger said you must be a double black diamond level skier to handle the steep slopes, vertical drops, and challenging terrain.

Baxter State Park officials warn that winter rescues often take days, so people who plan to snowshoe, cross-country ski, or camp need to be prepared. Lists of personal winter essentials and group gear can be found on the park's website.

Respect to anyone skilled...and brave...enough to take on something as daunting as skiing on Mt. Katahdin. If you're thinking about doing it, remember you must have what it takes because it's not for the faint of heart or novice skier. I'll happily watch the videos from my warm couch with a piping hot cup of coffee.
