A mill worker has died after the accidental release of some type of gas at Woodland Pulp and Paper.

Maine Mill Worker Dies After an Industrial Accident at a Baileyville Plant

WABI-TV reports University of Maine student Kasie Malcom died at the hospital after an inadvertant release of gas at the plant. Malcom had been working at the mill since June.

The Baileyville Fire Department was called to the mill on Main Street in Baileyville at approximately 6:20 pm on Tuesday for a report of two people who were injured.

Two Workers at Maine's Woodland Pulp and Paper Hospitalized After Incident

The two workers had been overcome by some type of gas that had been released inside the plant.

Both employees were transported to Calais hospital with serious injuries.

Officials at the time reported that it was an isolated incident inside the confines of the bleach plant at the mill and that there was no threat to the public.

Maine Paper Mill Incident Under Investigation By OSHA

A spokesperson for Woodland Pulp and Paper LLC confirmed that one of the two workers has passed away.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration will investigate the cause of the incident.
