Maine Hospital Receives ‘D’ Grade for Patient Safety
Our Pine Tree State is home to some of the best and most selfless frontline workers in the country. However, this rating raises some concerns.
We're not here to kick anyone while they're down or rub salt in the wound. Our goal is simply to report the facts as they're published, especially when it comes to something as important as patient safety. If one of our hospitals receives a lower-than-average grade, the community needs to be aware. Most importantly, we hope this information inspires improvement for the benefit of everyone.
So, with that in mind, who is grading our hospitals on patient safety, and what criteria are they evaluating?
The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade is the only rating system exclusively focused on hospital safety, helping consumers quickly identify the safest hospitals with letter grades ranging from A to F.
This system was developed in 2012 to address the number of people who die annually due to preventable hospital mistakes.
Evaluating hospitals based on how likely patients are to experience accidents, injuries, errors, or harm during their stay, The Leapfrog Group’s goal is to empower consumers with essential information to make informed decisions about their healthcare.
Now that we’ve clarified that, which hospital in Maine received a 'D' grade for patient safety?
According to The Leapfrog Group and their Hospital Safety Grading system, Cary Medical Center in Caribou received a 'D' grade for Fall 2024. This is a drop from the 'C' grade the hospital received in Spring 2024, and an even further decline from the 'A' grade it earned in Spring 2021.
To sum up, Cary Medical Center in Caribou is the only hospital in Maine to receive a grade lower than a 'C.'
Again, we want to emphasize that we are simply reporting what The Leapfrog Group has published.
