One of Maine’s Biggest Gas Stations to Close 1,000 Locations
Soon, Mainers may have to find a new favorite spot to pump gas as this gas giant has announced plans to shut down 1,000 of its locations.
Gas prices never seem to stay low enough for long enough, right? This can often leave us feeling like we're constantly overpaying at the pump.
Despite this frustration, we find ourselves constantly checking gas prices, though in reality, we have little to no control over them. After all, we can't just decide not to buy gas, right?
Some people have their go-to spots for fuel, choosing convenience based on their daily commute or proximity to home. Others don't pay much attention and fill up wherever is most convenient at the time. Then there are those folks with unwavering brand loyalty, always looking out for their preferred provider regardless of price.
Well, fans of this gas company are in for some bad news.
One of Maine’s largest gas station companies as well as one of the largest energy companies in the world, Shell, recently announced plans to close 1,000 locations.
According to Shell’s 'Energy Transition Strategy' report for 2024, the planned closures are a part of Shell’s future plans to transition their energy focus to EV charging sites, and less on fuel and their retail locations.
At the end of 2023, Shell had approximately 54,000 public charging stations for electric vehicles.
This number was significantly up from the 27,000 in 2022. Additionally, as a part of their energy transition strategy, Shell expects to have 'around 70,000 public charge points' by 2025 and 'around 200,000' by 2030.
According to Shell’s website, there are over 70 Shell locations in Maine as of March 2024. With all of these closures planned, we’ll just have to wait and see if and when Maine is affected.
