A Captain with the Raymond Fire Department was killed in a motorcycle accident in Massachusetts on Tuesday.

The accident happened on Interstate 495 in Chelmsford Monday afternoon. Police say a motorcycle being driven by 48-year-old David Mains struck the back of a Mercedes-Benz sedan. It's believed the sedan slowed down due to traffic congestion just before the crash. Mains' wife, Jen, was seriously injured in the accident but is expected to recover. The car's driver wasn't hurt.

Mains was a former 'firefighter of the year' and had won several other community and department awards. In a post on the department's Facebook page, residents were asked to keep the Mains family in their thoughts and prayers and show them support as they deal with the loss of David.

"He will be sorely missed and will leave a large void in our family and organization" the post also states, "that will not be filled without unmatched extraordinary efforts, pride, and dedication which Captain Mains put forth every day,"

David Mains leaves behind his wife, Jen, and four children.
