Mainers are receiving reminders from utility companies that the winter disconnection grace period is over, so it's time to pay up.

Expenses in Maine Go Up in the Winter As We Struggle to Heat Our Homes

If you're one of those who pays your bills on time, you probably don't know what I'm talking about. But anyone who's struggled to cover their bills knows that winter is a sweet time, because the electrical and gas providers can't turn off your service.

Maine's winters are harsh, and no one wants to think of a person or family struggling to stay warm without access to heat. So between November 15th and April 15th, Maine's utility companies are prohibited from disconnecting service.

Mainers are hearty when it comes to enduring challenging weather, but sometimes Mother Nature gets serious.

There are exceptions, of course. The providers can get approval through the Commission's Consumer Assistance and Safety Division. But that's not going to happen for the typical residential customer.

Just Because They Didn't Shut You Off, However, Your Bill Still Needs to Be Paid

Now, don't get me wrong. That doesn't mean your bills stop coming or the providers are prohibited from charging you, but they are not allowed to disconnect your service. This can come as a shock to some customers who allow their bills to mount over the winter.

As of April 15th, the utility providers can disconnect your service if you have an outstanding balance, and they will unless you work something out with them. So now is the time to call and talk to them about how you can settle your bill. They will be happy to set you up with a payment plan that will allow you to get the balance paid off while still paying your monthly bills.
