Maine DOT Urges Limited Travel During Monday’s Winter Storm

A huge winter storm dumping snow across the state has the Maine Department of Transportation urging residents to stay home.

Maine DOT Crews are Working to Keep Up With Winter Storm Fern

Winter Storm Fern is delivering, as promised, with snow falling at a rapid rate, limiting visibility on the roads, and keeping the plow drivers busy Sunday night and all day Monday.

Maine DOT officials say while those snow fighters are doing all they can to keep the roads safe, it may be necessary, in the areas with heavier bands of snow, to pause those operations periodically to keep the crews and equipment safe.

It's during these times that service may temporarily decrease, creating even more dangerous driving conditions.

Maine Drivers are Advised to Stay Off the Roads During Winter Storm Fern

Motorists are advised to stay home, if possible, and avoid unnecessary travel.

It's a good day for it because many businesses and services are closed today, including schools across the state, most bank branches, and even doctors' officers.

All State offices are closed today, as well.

Flights have been canceled at Bangor International Airport after a plane crashed on takeoff Sunday night.

Maine DOT Advises Motorists to Stay Safe During January Storm

If they must go out, drivers are urged to stay back from snowplows and give crews plenty of room to work.

Emergency numbers should be programmed into cellphones before heading out and drivers would be wise to have an emergency kit in their vehicle, in case they do go off the road.

Finally, motorists should practice their winter driving etiquette, including taking it slow, giving themselves plenty of time to stop, and never following too close.
