Ditching Russian vodka is becoming a bit of a thing across Maine.

It doesn't take more than a few seconds of scrolling on your phone to catch a glimpse of the events taking place in our world right now. And believe it or not, I'm not wading into that kind of political discussion. There's not much this DJ from Maine can do except sit back and watch. But that's not stopping some folks from finding a way to voice their discontent at current world events.

If you look around on Reddit, or Facebook, or Instagram, you'll see there's a trend happening in a lot of bars, liquor stores, and restaurants right now, where they're removing all Russian vodkas off their menus. While it may seem a bit drastic to some, Maine distilleries are going to reap the benefits.

There's a lot of vodka made right here in Maine.

I took a peek over at MaineSpirits.com, and there are at least two dozen different types of vodka being distilled right here in the Pine Tree State. Brands such as Cold River, Batson Clock Farm, Mossy Ledge, and Pembroke are just a few. And a lot of them make it out of good old Maine potatoes, which is a bonus.

My wife has to drink potato based vodka when she chooses to make a cocktail. She has celiac disease, and potato vodkas are gluten free, so that works out great for her. Some folks don't have to care, and just want to support Maine based companies, and there's nothing wrong with that either. Keeping it in the family is always the way to go.

Obviously, there's a lot happening over in that part of the world, and it's up to you what your reasons are for wanting local spirits. Lord knows the Russian stuff will likely skyrocket in price, so that's another thing to consider. Whatever your reasons... Keeping our own state moving forward is the right choice.
