A Lewiston man died early Friday morning in a single-vehicle crash on the northbound side of I-95 in Falmouth.

Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss says State Troopers responded to the crash site just after 5:00 Friday morning to mile marker 56. When they arrived, they found 30-year-old Brandon Bates of Lewiston, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

An investigation into the circumstances of the crash led police to believe that Bates had fallen asleep behind the wheel. His black Toyota Highlander appears to have left the roadway and traveled about 200 feet on the grass part of the shoulder. It went behind the guardrail and ended up hitting the bridge abutment to the Hurricane Road Overpass.

Bates was alone in the vehicle at the time of the crash.

Troopers were assisted at the scene by Falmouth Fire & Rescue and the Turnpike Authority. The crash remains under investigation.
