This Is the Largest Employer in Maine

There are many great and rewarding places to work in our Pine Tree State, but one employer stands out for hiring the most Mainers.

The latest population numbers suggest that nearly 1.5 million people live here in Maine. While not everyone is in the workforce—some are retired, too young to work, or between jobs—a large portion of Mainers are working, and that means someone has to be the state’s largest employer, right?

So, with that in mind, how do we know exactly which organization employs the most people in Maine, making it the state’s largest employer?

We reviewed the JobsInMaine.com report ‘Largest Employers in Maine,’ published on July 10th, 2024, which draws on data directly from the Maine Department of Labor. Their methodology involved identifying and ranking the top employers based on official state employment figures, then compiling and confirming the top 10 largest employers in Maine as of that publication date.

Now that we’ve got that cleared up, who is considered, by a wide margin, the largest employer in all of Vacationland, providing jobs to the most people?

Again, according to JobsInMaine.com and their report highlighting the ‘Largest Employers in Maine,’ the data shows that the State of Maine is actually the largest employer, with over 30,000 workers across a variety of industries, including healthcare, education, and public safety.

The report continues with more data from the Maine Department of Labor—which, again, is a section of the State of Maine and by extension part of the state’s largest employer.

According to their numbers, the second-largest employer is Maine Medical Center with over 8,000 employees, followed by Hannaford Supermarkets (7,000+), Central Maine Healthcare (6,000+), and Wal-Mart (5,000+).

And there you have it! With more than 30,000 employees, the state government employs more people than any other organization in Maine.
