Enormous Humpback Whale Crushes Boat and Crew in Portsmouth, New Hampshire
Holy. Smokes.
A few days ago, news outlets, radio stations, and social media accounts in the Seacoast area were all reporting on a humpback whale spotted between the Maine and New Hampshire border.
It is not super common for these great creatures to come this close to our area. Out near our coasts? Sure. But they typically do not come as close as this one was just two days ago.
“There have been a lot of menhaden, which is a type of small bait fish, in the river recently,” said Dianna Schulte of the Blue Ocean Society for Marine Conservation, according to a WGME article. “So likely, it was coming into the river just looking for some food.”
Well, that same humpback whale (most likely, anyway) is still here. The enormous beast breached the water this week, and crushed a boat in Portsmouth.
Check out the crazy video below. According to this tweet, it happened just off the coast of Portsmouth, New Hampshire.
First of all, a huge shoutout to the camera person. To be that close to an animal like that and have the nerve to stay focused and get the shot? Unbelievable camera work.
In all seriousness, everyone is okay, which is by far the most important thing!
Humpbacks can grow up to 60 feet long and weigh over 80,000 pounds. Needless to say, that boat got CRUSHED.
Again, thank goodness everyone is okay. And let us all use this as a reminder. There are whales, sharks, and other amazing creatures living in our waters.
Let's keep our beaches, waters, and communities clean.
