The Median Salary in Maine is Just Shy of $61,000

Just a decade ago, a $61,000 median salary in Maine would have been looked at with loving eyes. But in 2025, it's looked at much differently from both a regional and national perspective.

Maine has the lowest median salary of any New England state. Vermont is the next closest to Maine with a median salary of $65,000 per year. Massachusetts has the highest median salary in New England at $79,000 per year.

Maine is the Only State in New England With a Median Salary Lower Than National Average

Maine joins a slew of states in the midwest and south as the only states whose median salary is below the national average. That national median salary is $61,200.

Maine continues to face two major issues. Profitability in the state for businesses which allows them to offer more competitive salaries.

Another key issue is out-of-state companies finding qualified and talented workers in Maine and simply offering them substantial raises to move elsewhere.
