Every new year in Maine brings a handful of new laws. In some years, those laws are rather inconsequential for most people. But in 2026, several changes to existing laws could end up costing people in the state more money.
Here are 5 law changes in Maine that may cost you a little more money next year.
Tobacco Tax in Maine Set to Increase
For the first time in about two decades, Maine will have an increase on its tobacco tax.
For cigarette smokers, the tax on each pack will increase from $2 to $3.50.
Other tobacco products will face steep increases as well, from a 43% tax increasing to 75%.
The law was altered in hopes of curbing teen and young adult smoking, which has increased in recent years.
Adult-Use Cannabis Tax Increase
Starting on January 1, 2026, there will be a marginal increase on adult-use cannabis products in Maine. Taxes will go from 10% to 14%.
While there will be an increase on the retail side, Maine is actually lowering the excise tax on cannabis cultivation.
Subscription Service Tax Goes Into Effect in Maine
One piece of legislation that is likely to get blowback is the new sales tax on subscription services in Maine.
Every video and audio subscription service will be subject to the 5.5% sales tax in Maine. That means subscriptions to Netflix, Spotify, HBO Max and Amazon Prime all will come with a new tax attached to it.
Fishing License Fees Have Gone Up in Maine
Technically going into effect this September, fishing license fees have increased in Maine for the first time in 15 years.
For resident fishing licenses, there was a $7 increase, from $25 to $32. Most of that increase is planned for a conservation fund operated by the Maine Inland Fisheries and Conservation Department.
Property Tax Increases For Unorganized Territories in Maine Continue
The demand for rural land ownership in Maine has grown in recent years which has led the state to reevaluate unorganized territories.
That valuation has led to increased property taxes in some unorganized territories already with more expected in 2026.
