Throughout the state of Maine, you'll find beaches that have stayed pristine and beautiful over the course of many decades and even centuries.

Some of those beaches have had entire state parks built around them to continue to preserve their natural aura.

But with all of that splendor comes history. And some of that history isn't always beautiful. That includes a wicked shipwreck off the coast of Crescent Beach State Park in Cape Elizabeth, Maine.

A Massive 1807 Shipwreck on the Maine Coast Claims 16 Lives

In the summer of 1807, a boat by the name of Schooner Charles embarked on a trip from Boston to Portland, Maine.

The boat carried 22 passengers, including a bride-to-be named Lydia Carter.

As the schooner closed in on its arrival, dense fog caused the ship to veer off course. It was then that the Schooner Charles struck Watt's Ledge on the coast of Richmond Island.

16 of 22 passengers died in the waters. One of those people was Lydia Carter.

Perhaps it's because there's a portrait of Lydia Carter that hangs in the halls of the inn.
