Maine’s craft beer industry continues to be one heck of a monster, as breweries statewide continue to impress the masses.

As of this publication, there are over 100 breweries in the state. According to Statista, Maine had the second-highest number of breweries per capita (14.6) in the country in 2023.

This leads to two conclusions: Mainers (and those tourists we love so much) love beer, and they love supporting our wonderful local businesses.

Maine is a Wonderful State for Craft Beer Lovers

This state was built to be a craft beer mecca. The culture, tourism, and support for all things local are essentially the ethos of a craft brewery hotspot. And the numbers don’t lie.

With massive local support and tourism at consistently strong levels, I decided to take a look at BeerAdvocate’s Maine page, which lists the most popular beers in the state. I wanted to get a sense of what the “outsiders” (and Mainers, of course) think are the best styles, breweries, and flavors.

I must say, it’s a solid list. Of course, it’s no surprise that it’s peppered with the usual suspects like AllagashBissell Brothers, and Maine Beer. However, there are a few cameos from Foundation BrewingMarshall WharfOxbow, and Tributary.

It’s also not surprising to see a heavy variety of IPAs on the list. The polarizing style has been on an upward trajectory for years and doesn’t seem to be slowing down anytime soon.

Many other varieties can be found on the list, but none as prevalent as the hoppy pale ales.

Here's the Top 20 Maine Craft Beers According to BeerAdvocate

Here is a list of the 20 highest rated beers from Maine breweries on the website, BeerAdvocate.

The list is dominated by three breweries- Allagash, Bissel Brothers, and Maine Beer Co. The IPA style is clearly the most popular, which is not surprising given recent beer trends.

Research comes from Beer Advocate's Maine page in November of 2025.
