Local ‘FYZICAL’ Therapy Center Encouraging Folks To ‘Fight The Fall’…With Flamingos!
September is National Fall Prevention Awareness Month.
According to the CDC, healthcare providers across the nation are worried by the increasing number of falls among older folks, to the point that they've identified it as "a growing health concern." And with good reason.
"Falls are the leading cause of injury for adults age 65 and older (1). Older
adults have higher death rates from unintentional falls than adults in other
age groups...Recent CDC data from June 2025 revealed that death rates from unintentional falls are increasing among U.S. adults aged 65 and older, with rates for men higher than women. "
One locally owned physical therapy clinic is joining a nationwide effort to bring awareness of the dangers of falling and the importance of early balance screenings.
Benjamin Smith with FYZICAL Therapy & Balance Centers, Twin City Bangor, says the Bangor clinic has put together a month-long "Fight The Fall" campaign for September, dedicated to helping people learn more about dizziness, balance issues.
FYZICAL's Clinical Director, Dr. Renee Moran, says with the right care, many falls may even be preventable.
“We want our community to know that dizziness and falls are not a normal part of aging, and physical therapy can make a life-changing difference.”
One of the fun ways they're inspiring dialogue around issues of balance is through the theme of "Flamingos."

“Flamingos are known for their incredible ability to balance gracefully on one leg. At FYZICAL, we use them as a playful reminder of the importance of balance—and what can happen when it’s lost.”
A local man, all too familiar with balance issues, Jeff Igoe, says the diagnosis and treatment of his balance issues has greatly improved his quality of life.
“Before therapy, simply moving from one room to another in my house made me dizzy...Now, I can enjoy my life again without fear of falling. The care I received at FYZICAL gave me my freedom back.”
On September 20th, FYZICAL will be holding free balance screening for anyone interested in finding out more about their personal fall risk. They will also have tons of information regarding resources available to those who need them.
If you'd like more information, you can call the FYZICAL Therapy & Balance Centers at (207) 291-571 or check them out at their Bangor Mall Blvd. location.
