This is a must-do for every Mainer in 2026!

Just across the Penobscot River from Bucksport, the town of Prospect is home to the historic Fort Knox. Built between 1844 and 1869, it was Maine’s first fort made entirely of granite. Before that, most forts were built with wood, stone, and earth, so this one was a big deal—and it’s still impressive to see today. Walking around the fort gives you a real sense of Maine’s history and a cool peek into life back in the 1800s.

Mark your calendars! The Fort Knox Historic Site and the Penobscot Narrows Observatory Bridge, will open for the 2026 season on Friday, May 1, and they’re open through the end of October. Both spots are perfect for a day trip with family or friends, checking out the fort, taking in the views, and just enjoying some fresh Spring air.

Even when the season isn’t officially open, the Fort Knox grounds are open daily from 9 a.m. to sunset. Dogs are welcome as long as they’re leashed (4–6 feet), well-behaved, and cleaned up after.

And don’t miss the Penobscot Narrows Observatory Bridge, it has to be seen to be believed! It’s the first bridge observation tower in the U.S. and the tallest public bridge observatory in the world! From 420 feet up, you get 360-degree views of the bridge, Fort Knox, the Penobscot River, and Penobscot Bay.

Fun fact: it’s even taller than the Statue of Liberty! Hop in Maine’s fastest elevator to the top and take in a view you won’t forget.

Check out the Fort Knox website for more information, or give them a call at 207-469-6553
