One of the Worst US Cities for Bed Bugs Is Only a Few Hours from Maine
It's something we certainly don't want to think about, let alone talk or write about but, alas, here we are- BED BUGS.
If it makes you feel any better (it won't), the CDC says that bed bugs are small, flat parasites that feed primarily on the blood of human beings.
They can range in size anywhere from 1mm to 7mm.
What's worse? Bed bugs can live for MONTHS without eating, which means they can just be straight up chilling in your house and won't even starve to death. What the heck?!
According to Maine statute Title 14 §6021-A, as outlined in Maine.Gov, landlords in the state of Maine are required by law to contact a pest control service and have a property examined and mitigated for bed bugs WITHIN five days of receiving an initial complaint from a tenant.
In addition, Maine landlords must also provide all tenants with formal written notices on bed bug treatment and how to prevent them. Those same landlords must also keep records of bug maintenance and inspections performed on said properties.
The tenants on the other hand, are required by Maine statute to report any suspected infestations as well as cooperate with landlord-ordered bug inspections and remediation attempts.
Orkin released a 2024 list of the worst cities for bed bugs. Thankfully, Maine isn't on it, but one of the closest locations is in New York. So if you're making a trip that way, watch out for bed bugs!
