Rescue crews scrambled to a small Central Maine pond on Wednesday afternoon after reports of multiple people and their dogs going through thin ice.

It all began on Wednesday at around 5:30 in Fairfield when a couple of dogs wandered out onto the dangerously thin ice of a small pond. One of the dogs then ended up falling through the thin ice.

After the dog fell through, at least two people ventured out to try and rescue the stranded dog. While attempting the rescue, those two people ended up falling into the ice-cold water.

The Kennebec Journal reports that calls came into Somerset County Communications Center about the emergency. This prompted a quick response from multiple agencies to the pond.

Rescue crews were able to get the people and the dog out of the water using canoes. The two people that were pulled from the water declined any medical treatment, however the KJ reports that the dog that had fallen through suffered life-threatening injuries.

At this time there is no word on the condition of the dog that fell through the ice or the identity of the people that had fallen through attempting the rescue.

In addition to Fairfield Police Department and Fairfield-Benton Fire Department, the Maine State Police, Delta Ambulance and the Maine Warden Service also provided aid at the scene.

The Fairfield Police Department issued a statement reminding residents that ice conditions are extremely dangerous and that everyone should remain off of the ice.

This is a developing story that we will update as more information becomes available.
