Maine Lobster Predicts Six More Weeks of Summer
Each February, the eyes of the nation are fixed on a small town in Pennsylvania.
Millions of Americans watch their TVs, tablets, and phones to see whether or not a rodent will predict an early spring or an extra six weeks of winter.
Each September a lot fewer Americans are fixated on the Coastal Maine town of Belfast to see a weather predication made by a crustacean.
According to a recent article on the WCSH 6 website, the lobster known has Passy Pete has predicted that we will get an additional six weeks of summer.
The Story of Passy Pete
Every year for nearly a decade, the Belfast Barons, a crew of local small-business owners, hand Passy Pete the Lobster two scrolls to choose from. One of these scrolls indicates a quick end to summer, the other predicts an extra six weeks of nice weather.
This time around, he went with the one promising six more weeks of summer. Not a bad call if you ask the crowd, which included folks who traveled from as far as Maryland and Texas just to watch.
The audience was all in on Pete’s pick. Most of the several hundred attendees were excited at the prospect of more warm weather and many said that they were looking forward to attending the event again next year.
And that’s the whole point, organizers say. It’s lighthearted, it’s fun, and it brings people downtown. Even though the event only lasts about 20 minutes, it brings hundreds of people downtown.
