The Air Will Be Hot, But The Water Will Still Be Frigid
Earlier this week, I posted about how starting tomorrow, the mercury is going to be making a steady climb upwards as we head into next week. By Tuesday, we'll see temperatures getting into the 90's. We hit 80 tomorrow, and it just goes up from there. As much as I've been looking forward to warmer weather, I'm not ready for this yet.
And of course, like most Mainers, I'm looking forward to going wherever it is coolest. Usually that's out to camp. Although, last year was the first time in 50+ years of having the camp in our family, we got edged out by the heat. It was so hot inside and out, we actually had to leave for the day.
Normally, I'd just jump in the lake. And I think I did that late July day. And it was pretty refreshing. The lake wasn't too cold, but wasn't so warm that it wasn't delightful. But as we head into our first really warm days of the year so far, the water may not be as inviting as you'd like.
Look, I know there's plenty of "polar bears" out there who jump in the ocean in the dead of winter. But face it... the water is warmer than the air in the winter. But it's still so friggin' cold that I don't understand why people do it, haha. But right now, the temptation to jump in the lake or ocean shouldn't be taken lightly.
The ocean isn't even 60 degrees yet. My lake at camp, though I didn't stick a thermometer in it, felt like ice water when I stuck my toes in it yesterday. When I was a kid I may have jumped right in. As an adult, it could be deadly. Not specifically just for me, but literally anyone.
It's an intense shock to the system, and can cause one's heart to stop, or cause someone to not be able to swim safely because the cold water could cause immediate muscle fatigue and cramps. And since this kind of injury is super unpredictable, it should probably just be avoided altogether.
I get it, we're all Mainers, and we'll do what we want. And sure... this is just common sense, but how many people can you count on both hands, in your life, that have absolutely no common sense? That's what I thought. This is for them, so instead armchair quarterbacking it, spread the word. you might save someone's life.
