#Hashtag Hometown of the Week: Millinocket
Every week we will feature a new hometown and share photos and facts using hashtags on social media. This week our #hashtag hometown is Millinocket (and East Millinocket)!!
Though the town has changed quite a bit in recent years, the town still has many popular places to go and things to see and above all, the residents are proud to call Millinocket home. From annual festivals, snowmobile parades, and new marathons to Maine's tallest mountain, Millinocket has it all. Many assume the name comes from the town being home to what was once the largest paper mill in the world, Great Norther Paper, but it actually means 'the land of many islands'. The town is nicknamed 'The Magic City' because of how fast it grew out just being wilderness.
Today the town is only home to about 4,500 people but is much busier in the summer with tourists, AT hikers and travelers flocking to Baxter State Park. Even though the park isnt in Millinocket we will included it as it is the closest town. Millinocket continues to rise after every challenge knocks them down and for that we honor them this week!
