Passersby stopped to help a driver when his vehicle crashed on I-295 in Freeport and caught fire.
Maine State Police Say a Vehicle Crashed on I-295 in Freeport and Caught Fire
Maine State Police have not released the driver's identity, but say that he was taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland with minor injuries.
Just before 7:00 pm on Monday, Troopers were called to a single-vehicle crash on I-295 northbound, near mile marker 20 in Freeport.

When they arrived, they found a Volvo XC60 fully engulfed in flames.
The vehicle was approximately 60 feet off the roadway, in a wooded area, and the fire was beginning to spread into the woods.

Maine Department of Public Safety Spokesperson Shannon Moss said passersby stopped on the side of the interstate and ran to help.
They pulled the driver from the vehicle and got him to safety.
Police say the driver and the Good Samaritans suffered minor injuries and smoke inhalation.
Driver in Fiery Freeport, Maine Crash Suffered a Medical Event
I-295 northbound was closed for about 40 minutes while emergency crews worked to clear the scene.
Freeport and Yarmouth firefighters also responded and extinguished the fire.
Officials say it was later determined the driver had suffered a medical event before the crash, which caused the vehicle to leave the road.
Police have not released the driver's name or the names of the people who ran to help.
