The American Red Cross is assisting residents of a Rockland apartment complex that was damaged by fire Thursday.

The fire at the seven-unit apartment building on Main St. was reported at about 3:30 p.m., the Bangor Daily News reports.

Joanne Sausedo told the BDN she heard a smoke detector, but she assumed it was a false alarm. A few moments later, Sausedo saw smoke coming through the floor boards. Sausedo says she made her way through heavy smoke as she went downstairs and out the front door.

The cause of the fire, which started on the first floor, is still under investigation.

Fire officials didn't say how many people were living in the apartment complex and the extent of the damage to the building wasn't released.

No injuries were reported.
