Update: One Person Was Injured in an Ellsworth, Maine Vehicle Explosion

Update as of 4:30 PM Thursday, July 16th: According to the Maine Department of Public Safety:

"The Office of State Fire Marshal has learned that 59-year-old Bruce Spencer of Ellsworth has died as a result of injuries sustained in the fire that occurred on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, in Ellsworth."

The State Fire Marshal's Office is investigating an explosion in a converted bus that left one person severely injured.

The injured person's name has not been released, but officials say they were transported to Northern Light Maine Coast Hospital.

Ellsworth Fire Officials say the person was able to escape the bus before rescue crews arrived, but suffered severe burns.

A Propane Explosion Left One Person Severely Injured in Ellsworth, Maine

Fire crews were called to 253 North Street in Ellsworth at approximately 3:00 pm on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, for a report of a propane explosion involving a bus that had been converted into a recreational vehicle.

While the victim was given medical attention, firefighters worked to secure the scene, extinguishing minor debris fires and isolating on-site hazards, such as propane tanks.

The State Fire Marshal's Office is investigating the cause of the fire, but early indications suggest it started in a cabinet beneath the propane range.

Investigators believe the most likely ignition source was the electric compressor motor of a nearby refrigerator.

Officials say the RV was supplied by two 25-pound propane cylinders located in a rear exterior compartment.

This incident remains under investigation.
