An 88-year-old man died Monday when his Biddeford apartment house burned, leaving another 34 people homeless.

Smoke from the huge fire could be seen in Saco, with flames visible on the roof of the building. The State Fire Marshal's Office says 88-year-old Arnold Goldman was killed in the fire. According to the Portland Press Herald, it took firefighters several hours to get to Goldman's first floor apartment because the roof collapsed, causing the second floor to fall into the first floor units.

The State Fire Marshal's Office will investigate to determine what sparked the blaze, but crews on the scene said they believe the fire started in Goldman's apartment and that he just couldn't get out.
