So there you are, out with the friends and family and on your way to Burger King to pick up a late night Whopper with cheese, and of course fries and a shake.  But wait, there's blue lights flashing in your rear view mirror.

As far as you're concerned, you didn't do anything wrong.  You were doing the speed limit at the time and you stopped at the light a while back and used your blinker.  WTF?

The cops didn't know that.  But, what they did know is that you have an air freshener hanging from your rear view mirror, and that's a good reason to pull you over and find out what's going on, if anything.

Yes, it's illegal to hang those sweet smelling air fresheners from your rear view mirror here in Maine.  Graduation tassels, fuzzy dice, sunglasses, and of course nowadays, face masks too.

So you refuse to believe us, eh?  You just can't fathom that hanging a baseball card size photo of that hot chick that kills zombies on Fear the Walking Dead from your rear view mirror can get you into hot water, or for that matter, a ticket.

Then put on your glasses and read Maine Law Title 29-A Chapter 19 §2082. Windows, Section 2 titled Objects:  "A person may not operate a motor vehicle with an object placed or hung in or on the vehicle, other than the required or provided equipment of the vehicle, in a manner that obstructs or interferes with the view of the operator through the windshield or prevents the operator from having a clear and full view of the road and conditions of traffic."

So there you go.  It may not seem like a big deal to you, but hanging stuff from your rear view mirror will hinder your view of the road, and also give Maine cops an excuse to pull you over while you're driving that hot little ticket home that your wife has no idea about.

Play it safe, for a variety of reasons.
