Police have confirmed that a pair of suspicious $20 bills that were recently brought to the Madawaska police station were fake.

Police told the Fiddlehead Focus that one of the bills was turned in by a local merchant, while the other was brought to the police station by a resident who said the bill came from an ATM.

The bills were discovered in late September.

Police Chief Ross Dubois urged residents in an Oct. 4 Facebook post to keep an eye out for the counterfeit bills.

Some counterfeit $20 and $50 bills turned up last year in Fort Kent, but police have found no connection between the two cases.
