Carrie Underwood stole the show at the 2016 CMT Awards Wednesday night (June 8) with her powerful performance of "Church Bells." Beginning a stripped down version of the song alongside a banjo player as smoke engulfed the stage, Underwood's vocals soared, the spotlight fixated on her.

Dressed in a skin-tight black jumpsuit and a cape, by the time she got to the first chorus, Underwood ripped off the cape as a full band and gospel choir joined in on the song, igniting it.

By the last verse of "Church Bells," Underwood joined the choir for what would be one of the most talked about performances of the night and the only performance to receive a standing ovation at Nashville's Bridgestone Arena.

Underwood also took home an award for Female Video of the Year for "Smoke Break." She thanked fans in a caption of a selfie on her Instagram page.

"So...this just happened!!! I have the best fans in the world! Thank you!!!"

In addition to winning the Female Video of the Year for "Smoke Break," Underwood also won CMT Performance of the Year for the song.

The banjo-driven track tells the tale of a woman who gets revenge on her abusive husband. Meanwhile, the new music video for the song is a replica of Underwood’s nightly tour. Whether she’s on harmonica, acoustic guitar or simply running around the stage singing her songs, the excitement of her live show is evident throughout the nearly four-minute clip.

“Church Bells” was written by Zach Crowell, Brett James and Hillary Lindsey.
