A Carmel woman is accused of embezzling over $200,000 from a law enforcement motorcycle club in Bangor.

46-year-old Bessie Small had worked for the Blue Knights International Law Enforcement Motorcycle Club since 1998 as the organization's office manager. But she was put under investigation after an audit last summer turned up an estimated $228,000 in fraudulent charges.

Assistant D.A. Stephen Burlock told the BDN that, until 2013, Small was allowed to write her own paychecks. After the audit, the organization's President because suspicious and attempted to get copies of the checks from Small. When she kept putting him off, he went to the bank and found that many were allegedly for more than she was owed by the organization. She's charged with theft by unauthorized taking.
