A man was killed in a crash Tuesday evening in Buxton, and police in that town are now looking for two people who may have removed the victim from his vehicle.

The single-vehicle crash on Route 202 near Boynton Road was reported around 6 p.m.

The victim, described by police as an older man, was the only occupant of the vehicle, a silver Toyota Corolla.

According to a report from the Portland Press Herald, police believe two people in a pickup truck stopped at the scene and removed the victim from the vehicle, possibly because it was smoking or on fire.

“Upon our arrival, which wasn’t long after the call, they were already gone,” said Scott Camire, a local police officer. “I’m looking for witnesses to come forward to tell us what might have happened.”

Police said the Corolla left the road and struck a tree. Speed is believed to have been a factor in the crash.

The victim's name is expected to be released after his family is notified.
