A fire on North Main Street in Brewer closed the intersection at the end of the Joshua Chamberlain Bridge last night.

The fire broke out just before 8:00 at a multi-unit building at 18 North Main Street. The building has private apartments as well as the offices of Penobscot Property Management. Brewer Public Safety Director Jason Moffitt says it appears that the fire started on the third floor. Flames were visible from the apartment on that floor when crews from Brewer and Bangor arrived. One person, who was home at the the time, was able to get out safely.

Traffic was closed on the Joshua Chamberlain bridge and for a portion of North Main Street while firefighters worked. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.

We'll update this story as more details become available.
