Fire crews battled a massive fire on Thursday at the Bluenose Inn in Bar Harbor.

The four-alarm fire first was reported at about 2:30 PM, and burned intensely for more than four hours, destroying much of an annex located behind the main building of the Bluenose.

As of 710 PM, fire officials said the fire was under control, with hot spots being addressed.

Route 3, Eden Street, remained closed to traffic as of Thursday evening.

Firefighters first to the scene reported flames upon arrival.

The Hancock County Emergency Dispatch was activated. All Hancock County firefighters were called out, with Penobscot and Waldo Counties backfilling, to help cover Hancock County.

As of 7:10 PM, Ellsworth and Orland departments were released from the scene and other crews were expected to be released shortly thereafter.

The firefighters on the scene were challenged by the ice and snow on the roads, and have had to hand-carry hoses up the hill from the College of the Atlantic, to get water to the scene. They also worked to save the many trees that surround the Inn.

Crews from as far away as Milford, Lincoln, Glenburn, and Howland were called in to help.

There were no reported injuries.

The State Fire Marshal's Office will investigate in an effort to determine the cause of the fire.

If you are local and want to help, the fire department is asking for donations of bottles of water, Gatorade, pizzas, high-energy bars, or fruit for the firefighters, as they are expected to be on the scene all night. They are asking that folks drop off those donations down by the College of the Atlantic, as the road has been closed. Hannaford in Bar Harbor has already made a delivery of drinks and snacks, as well.

Here is a video from the scene taken by Frank Moya.

The original Bluenose Inn was destroyed by fire in 1994. It was since rebuilt. This fire is not in the section that was previously burned.

Smoke could be seen on a live webcam overlooking the area.
