Officials are asking for the public's help determining what happened to a bicyclist, who was found unconscious on the side of the road in West Bath.

The 34-year-old man was found lying alongside the road, in the area of 374 Campbell's Pond Road, just after noon on Saturday. His bike was laying next to him in the gravel, and the Sagadahoc County Sheriff's Office says he was wearing a helmet. No one else was around, so officials aren't sure whether he was hit by a vehicle or whether there may be some other reason for the man to have gone down. All investigators seem to know is that it appears he was headed south. The man's name has not been released and officials haven't said how badly he was hurt, although he was taken to Maine Medical Center.

Now, investigators are working to determine whether this was a traffic accident, or if there was some other cause. Anyone with information about the incident, including anyone who may have seen the bicyclist earlier in the day, is asked to call the Sheriff's Office at (207) 443-9711.

We'll update this story as more details become available.
