One Maine City Ranked Among the Best Places to Raise a Family

This city in our Pine Tree State has been named one of the best in the country to raise a family this year.

WalletHub’s “Best & Worst Places to Raise a Family (2026)” report compared 182 U.S. cities across five key categories.

Those categories are family fun, health and safety, education and child care, affordability, and socioeconomics. The rankings were based on 45 weighted metrics, with each city receiving an overall score. The analysis focused only on the city's proper boundaries and did not include the surrounding metro areas.

Fremont, California, ranked as the best place to raise a family in 2026, followed by Overland Park, Kansas; Irvine, California; Plano, Texas; and Columbia, Maryland.

Portland was the first and highest-ranking Maine city to appear on the list, ranking 30th overall, including 162nd for family fun, 50th for health and safety, 23rd for education and child care, 47th for affordability, and 21st for socioeconomics.

WalletHub analyst Chip Lupo said finding the best place to raise a family can be difficult because parents often must balance those factors.

He said families also may want to stay within a reasonable drive of relatives, making it helpful to narrow the search to a few strong options.
